History:

The mayor of Alphen asked Van den Brink in August 1949 if he could show his bird collection to the public. This became so popular that the owners of the Ten Rhijn estate by the owner opened the colloction permanent on 17 May 1950. It was the first bird park in the world. Toucans were featured on the posters for the park's opening. 1956 the Van der Valke bought the park and liked the toucan as symbol  and since it is the logo of the Van der Valk restaurant chain and Hotel Avifauna, which is situated on the edge of the park.

On the night of 23 December 2005 a fire broke out. About twenty birds were killed. The stables and an adjoining house were completely destroyed by the fire, and replacement buildings were completed in 2008.

In 2012, Bird Park Avifauna officially became a foundation, all its income will directly benefit the birds. Van der Valk Avifauna continues to provide the hospitality and even the main sponsor of the birds.

In the night of 25 to 26 September 2014, a large number (30) of birds were stolen from the park. Although most of them have been found in an ongoing investigation, unfortunately, a few have died due to neglect from the thieves.

2016 the Nuboso area was opened

After paying the entrance fee we have a small hut for silkie chickens and to the right ostriches. On the left we find Nuboso with humming birds and a walk in area for tamarins. Behind it we find 2 large aviaries, one for vultures and the other for Steller's sea eagle. Entering the next house we find tropical birds from the Philippines as well as other tropical regions. Out side again it is time to see some pheasants.  Follow then the path on the right of the coscoroba svans to meet humboldt penguins as well as to large aviaries for macaws. The go up the stairs to see different owls, down again you have the lesser flamingos and other water fowl. Opposite we have the Cuba terrace with the caribbean birds in an aviary behind it. Out side again pass the bridge to see Chilean flamingos. Turning left we meet the lesser pandasand have a large area for saddle-billed storks. At the Australian enclosure follow the path to the right to get to a lake. Walk around the lake to meet hornbills, pelicans and go inside to the funny lemurs.
